How the MotoGP start test works

  1. Tap the stage or press Space. The red light comes on.
  2. It stays on for a random 2 to 5 seconds. Do not move.
  3. Go the moment it goes out. Moving before is a jump start: two Long Lap Penalties.

Frequently asked questions

How does a MotoGP start work?

After the warm-up lap the riders stop on the grid. A red light comes on for between 2 and 5 seconds, and the race starts when it goes out (FIM regulations, art. 1.18.14).

What is the penalty for a jump start in MotoGP?

The standard penalty is two Long Lap Penalties, to be done within 5 laps of being notified. Anticipation means the bike is moving forward when the red lights go out.

How is it different from an F1 start?

F1 builds up five pairs of lights, one per second, then waits 0.2 to 3 seconds. MotoGP shows one red light and waits 2 to 5 seconds: one signal, a longer and wider wait.

Can I use clutch mode?

Yes: hold the stage or Space while the light is on and let go when it goes out, like a rider releasing the clutch lever.
